Hello All -

Chick Corea is coming out with a new CD featuring a band he has put together called "Touchstone." They recorded an album based on the shoddy literature of L. Ron Hubbard's book of the same name. The video preview can be seen by clicking on the Ultimate Adventure logo on the upper left hand corner of the home page.

The sound of the music is very reminiscent of my Spanish Heart. In fact one song sounds exactly like a tune from that album.

Anyway, thought you all might be interested. Steve Gadd, Vinnie are interviewed. Tom Brechtlein is also on the project.

I suppose it's actually not a "new" idea per se...the original Touchstone band / project album was first released in '82 with Lenny White & Acuna on drums, also with Alias, DiMeola, DeLucia, Stan Clarke, Carlos Benavent, etc...

Interesting that he's going back to the relative "beginnings"...but I can do without Mo' Ron Hobbitt/Hubba-bubba misty new-age Land. I don't mind proactive positivity, but when it gets into cultish indoctrination & cosmic, weird, Wot Dizzyland, then i tend to remain outside the City Gate & off the Sidewalk...AFA those scillytology books...anyone Got a Match?
Still, he's long been an incredible muso [with equally backing musos] regardless. Funny how true - "genius often comes with a price"...

It's funny how Vinnie's wacko Jesus obsession is almost aplauded, but Chick finds inspiration in a non-Jesus freak and it's "the price of genius"??

Let's get this straight: I'm no Hubbard OR Jesus fan, but I bristle at the concept of deriding Chick's choice because it is the "wrong" religion. ALL religion is a waste of time and brain cells. I laugh much harder at Vinne putting his head so far up Jesus' a$$ than Chick reading a science fiction book and being inspired to write about it. "Drummers for Jesus" concerts? Why I didn't even know Jesus was short of cash! Maybe too many altar boy pay-offs.

Science fiction is just that...fiction; whether it has burning bushes and parting seas and walking dead guys or space ships that travel across galaxies to see other planets it's all the same. You can't take EITHER too seriously.

Whatever inspires the music to be it's best is fine with me. Even if Chick becomes a born-again Je$u$ freak, his music will still inspire me to better myself as a musician.

Go ahead - send hate mail, I expect it.

Personally, I've never been a big fan of Chick Corea. I buy his music because I usually like and appreciate the performances by his sidemen, but I can't say Chick's keyboard playing or choice of sounds moves me. I much prefer Jan Hammer, Keith Jarrett, Herbie Hancock and Lyle Mays.

As for the religion choices these guys make, I am not interested one way or the other.

just happened to to be watching south park at the moment and their take on Scientology.. funny as usual. interesting timing...

Well, I will comment on the positive.

Chick is an icon and so are the players
mentioned, each, in their own right.

These guys can believe anything, as long
as they play music and make the world a
better place.

I have met and played, with Chick. I have
not met many musicians or people, for that
matter, as positive as he is. He is a
credit to us all.

While not having met Vinnie, what I have
read and heard of him, written and in his
music, leads me to believe that he is as
positive.

These two individuals have done so much
for us. I cannot denegrate their belief sys-
tems, when I would not want mine treated as
such. It's not even about music or the drums
but more than that, this particular freedom
is a cornerstone, in my view.

I think the world of Chick and Vinnie.

Like him or not, Chick has been incredibly influencial, he's always been on the forfront of jazz, and, IMO, tends to do whatever he sets out to do well. He has a pretty distinctive style, which i guess you can either like or hate, so i understand why people dont like some of his stuff.
